In this instance, the North American Aviation P51 Mustang serves as the design touchpoint, perhaps the best all-purpose fighter of its time. Built in a mere 120 days, the manufacturer introduced several innovative features, including low-drag wings and a unique engine cooling system, with a Merlin engine soon allowing the P51 to expand performance into high altitudes. The single-seater, long-range fighter first flew in 1940 and was in service for over four decades. The P-51 Mustang timepiece includes the distinctive Super AVI design with large, highly legible Arabic numerals on the dial and bezel. Its sturdy case measures 46mm and the oversized crown sits at 3 o’clock. FOR PILOTSKnurled bezels provide optimal grip and a nod to the original design of the 1953 “Co-Pilot”, while the top stitched calfskin straps reference the seams found on leather flight gear of the era. The sapphire case back is adorned with a filigree silhouette of the iconic aircraft. Pilots and other travelers will appreciate the ability to track a second time zone using the 24-hour marking on the inner bezel and the red tipped GMT hand. The P-51 design comes in two versions – a stainless steel case with black dial and gold-brown leather strap or an 18k red gold case with an anthracite dial and black leather strap.
